Why is Wellness So Important?

There is a great deal of research on Health and Mental Health in Canadians in general and in Canadian workplaces. Stress as a reason for absence from work has increased 316 percent since 1995 and it is at the root of 70 to 90% of visits to the doctor.

A recent study from Statistics Canada reported that:

  • About 500,000 Canadians are absent every week due to mental health or illness.
  • Since 2012, depression has increased by more than 60 percent and anxiety has doubled.
  • Between absenteeism, which is when employees call in sick, and presenteeism, which is when employees show up to work but aren’t performing at the level they would normally be at, the overall cost to the Canadian economy is $50 billion annually.

There are now many studies that demonstrate that an effective wellness program can SAVE you money.

  • Health Canada has reported an expected 340% ROI when implementing the right wellness programs.
  • Health Affairs in a broad study showed a 610% return.
  • And while most organizations report about a 300% ROI, some have reported as high as 1100%.
